President Pahor and President Osmani-Sadriu of Kosovo: a safe and peaceful future for the countries of the Western Balkans lies in Euro-Atlantic integration

Ljubljana, 4. 7. 2022 | press release

Dr Vjosa Osmani-Sadriu, president of Kosovo, is on an official visit to Slovenia with her husband today and tomorrow at the invitation of her Slovenian counterpart Borut Pahor. This marks her first official visit to Slovenia.

An official reception with military honours was followed by the laying of a wreath on the monument to all victims of wars and war-related violence in Congress Square in Ljubljana. The visit then moved to the presidential palace for talks between the two presidential couples, followed by one-on-one talks between the presidents, and a plenary session between the Slovenian and Kosovar delegations headed by the two presidents.

At the press conference following the talks President Pahor warmly welcomed President Osmani-Sadriu and emphasised the friendly relations between Slovenia and Kosovo. His view is that relations are excellent in all areas.

The two leaders discussed the most pressing issues, in particular the situation in the Western Balkans, and the war in Ukraine and its impact on security in south-eastern Europe. They welcomed the decision by the European Council to award candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova, and expressed their regret that there were no significant moves with regard to enlargement involving the countries of the Western Balkans. They repeated their joint view: that a peaceful and secure future for the region is only possible in Euro-Atlantic integration.

President Pahor said that all leaders must do everything they can, everything in their power, to resolve disagreements, problems and open questions in the region peacefully, to reinforce the belief among people and leaders alike that a European future is feasible and realistic, and to make their partners in Brussels see the geopolitical importance of this region and give it the requisite attention. President Pahor reiterated that in the current complex international environment we must all endeavour to strengthen peace and security in the Western Balkans.

He agreed with President Osmani-Sadriu that the leaders’ summit of the Brdo-Brijuni Process, which this year will be held at Brdo pri Kranju on 12 September, should issue a strong declaration that gives a clear signal to the EU on the geopolitical importance of the enlargement process.

He expressed his support for Kosovo on the path to democratisation, reform and Euro-Atlantic integration. President Osmani-Sadriu thanked President Pahor for the support that Slovenia has offered Kosovo to date in its pathway to Euro-Atlantic integration and its membership of other international organisations, and expressed a desire for close cooperation between the two countries in the future. She briefed her Slovenian counterpart on the current state of dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina.

The official visit continued with a gala luncheon held in honour of President Osmani-Sadriu by President Pahor at Vila Podrožnik.

Later at the Ministry of Defence President Osmani-Sadriu bestowed Kosovo’s highest military honours on members of the Slovenian Armed Forces who have participated in peacekeeping missions in Kosovo over the last 22 years. The honours were received by Major-General Roman Urbanč, deputy-chief of the general staff of the Slovenian Armed Forces.

In the evening President Pahor and President Osmani-Sadriu will unveil a bench celebrating the friendship between the two countries at Kromberk Castle near Nova Gorica. They will then be the guests of Dr Asta Vrečko, the culture minister, and Dr Klemen Miklavič, mayor of Nova Gorica, at the Kosovo National Theatre’s production of Spring Awakening at the Slovene National Theatre’s Nova Gorica branch.
