President Pahor concludes his visit to Brussels with meeting with the President of the European Council

Ljubljana, 21. 2. 2019 | press release

The President of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, today concluded a two-day visit to Brussels by meeting with the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk.

Mr Pahor first thanked Mr Tusk for his leadership in recent years. The two leaders exchanged their views on the future of the European Union in light of the European elections and on the greatest challenges currently faced by the Union.

They devoted most of their attention to the situation in the Western Balkans. Mr Pahor, as the Co-Chair of the Brdo–Brijuni Process, presented the plans related to its Summit to be held in Tirana in May. He also thanked Mr Tusk for his support in this initiative.

Mr Pahor and Mr Tusk exchanged opinions on other current international topics and agreed that the world could be assessed as less safe and that it is therefore even more important that those who believe in the European Union are active supporters of European integration and contribute to the strengthening of cooperation in the days leading to and following the European elections.

The two leaders also exchanged their opinions on Brexit and the manner of the UK’s withdrawal from the EU. Mr Pahor reiterated that Slovenia will consider a solution to be acceptable if it is acceptable for Northern Ireland.

At the end of the talks, President Pahor highlighted the importance of the Three Seas Initiative and, as the host of this year’s summit in Ljubljana, presented the progress made in the preparations and the most important substantive and organisational aspects thereof.

On the first day of his visit to Brussels, President Pahor had met with the President of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, the NATO Secretary-General, Jens Stoltenberg, and the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker.
