President of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, sent a letter to the President of the European Council, Charles Michel
Ljubljana, 16. 6. 2022 | press release
Today, 16 June 2022, the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, sent a letter to the President of the European Council, Charles Michel. In the letter, President Pahor calls for Bosnia and Herzegovina to be granted candidate status for membership in the European Union, without conditions.
He believes that this would strengthen the pro-European forces in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the dynamics of the internal adjustment to European norms. In his opinion, concrete steps are needed to ensure that the European Union expands to the Western Balkans as soon as possible.
President Pahor spoke about the initiative for the first time at the Munich Security Conference on 22 February this year. He also presented it at the Sarajevo Business Forum, on 11 May, and, most recently, a few days ago at the SEECP Leaders' meeting in Thessaloniki, which was also attended by European Council President Michel.
President Pahor announced the initiative to the President of the Republic of Poland, Andrzej Duda, when he accepted his invitation to sign, together with some other European leaders, at the end of February, a letter calling for Ukraine to be granted candidate status.
The letter from the President of the Republic of Slovenia is below.
