Response of the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, in connection with the Prime Minister's letter to the leaders of the European Union

Ljubljana, 18. 11. 2020 | press release

With regard to the questions from the media in connection with the Prime Minister's letter to the leaders of the European Union, please find below the response of the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor.

The President of the Republic of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, emphasises:

firstly,

that the 2014 National Assembly elections were legal and legitimate. Since the first democratic elections in April 1990, all elections have been legal and legitimate in accordance with the Slovenian Constitution;

secondly,

the next National Assembly elections, early or regular, will be, without a shadow of a constitutional doubt, legal and legitimate only on condition that the decision of the Constitutional Court on the urgent amendments is implemented beforehand. The Constitutional Court set a deadline of 21 December this year for the implementation of this decision, thus this is now the most important political issue of Slovenian democracy;

thirdly,

particularly in the light of the necessary response to the pandemic, we have all welcomed the agreement reached by the European Council in July on the new Multiannual Financial Framework of the European Union and the Recovery Fund. This agreement was then supplemented and approved by the European Parliament in adoption procedures in accordance with its powers. This decision must be complied with. A possible new solution can only be sought through united political will arrived at by means of interinstitutional dialogue.
