With regard to topical European and international issues, the talks focused on the future of the European Union and the current challenges it faces. The two presidents discussed Brexit, the situation in the Western Balkans, the migration situation and the need for a common European response to the migration issue, and the security situation in Europe and the world. They emphasised the need for a strong, integrated and unified European Union, agreeing that the problems Europe is facing should be discussed and addressed in a public and inclusive debate. They stressed that Slovenia and Germany both support EU enlargement to the Western Balkans, with clear expectations of the implementation of the necessary reforms and the fulfilment of all the criteria.
